A Case Summary: ‘Wildlife Care Support’ Was Provided, As Well As Transport…

Recently, in the case of transporting a wounded fledgling blackbird from a Vet Practice to a Wildlife Rescue, we helped out a bit more than just transporting…

The young bird had been brought in by a cat and the cat’s owner took the bird - with a wound to wing & eye - to their local Vet Practice.  This Vet Practice then contacted UKWT for transport help in getting the little one onto a Wildlife Rescue.

The Vet Practice were brilliant - especially the RVN overseeing the case - but they weren’t aware that antibiotics were necessary in the case of cat attack victims.

During our conversation, they asked where they could get advice on treatment for the bird pre-transport.  I contacted a wonderful wildlife Vet, Sarah, who kindly agreed to chat to the RVN at the Practice to advise on treatment & medications: the little one was then provided with the necessary antibiotics and eye care.  We also ensured that the little one was ‘fit for travel’ because transport to one of the nearest Rescues was 1hr 20mins.

This was all done while our very kind hearted UKWT Driver, Liz, was on her way to pick up the bird, so that no time was wasted in the process.  The youngster is now at Leicestershire Wildlife Hospital, benefitting from expert, ongoing care.

Hopefully this shows how much we can help a struggling, wild creature by working together and filling in the gaps for one another.  I am in awe of the RVN at the Practice who was so personally dedicated to helping the bird and Sarah who jumped straight on a call to offer advice (and of course Leicestershire Wildlife Hospital, who work round the clock to help wildlife throughout the year).

Fingers crossed for the little one.
